Three reasons to stay in Boulder instead
For most visitors Escalante is the right base, because it is five miles from the Hole-in-the-Rock turnoff and Boulder is thirty two. That is roughly an extra hour of driving on every canyon day, on a road you should not hurry.
Three things make Boulder the better call anyway.
- You are heading north. Boulder is 27 miles closer to Torrey and Capitol Reef. If tomorrow is a driving day, staying here saves you backtracking.
- The Burr Trail. It starts in Boulder and is paved for its first 31 miles to the Capitol Reef boundary. Staying here puts you at the trailhead rather than an hour from it.

Stay in Escalante for the canyons. Stay in Boulder for the drive, the Burr Trail, or the meal.
Plenty of people split it: two nights in Escalante for the slot canyons, one in Boulder on the way north. That is probably the best version of a four night trip through here.
What it is
A town that was cut off until the CCC arrived
Boulder sits at milepost 86 on Scenic Byway 12, in Garfield County, settled around 1890. It stayed isolated from other communities until the Civilian Conservation Corps built a road in from Escalante, which is why it turns up in lists of the last places in the United States to get a road, and why the mail went over the country by mule on what became the Boulder Mail Trail from 1902.
You feel that history in the scale of the place. Two hundred and twenty seven people, no supermarket, no fuel stop worth relying on, and a road in from either direction that takes real attention. What it has instead is position: the head of the Burr Trail, the foot of Boulder Mountain, and the quiet that comes with being hard to reach.
The Boulder Mail Trail is still walkable and is one of the few named landmarks that stayed inside the national monument after the boundary was cut in September 2026. See the boundary change.

The reason a lot of people come
Hell's Backbone Grill
A restaurant in Boulder serving what it calls Four Corners Cuisine, an updated combination of cowboy classics, Mormon recipes and traditional Southwestern cooking. It is supplied by Hell's Backbone Farm, an organic farm producing over 20,000 pounds of produce a year.
The record
Zagat rated 26 for food. Nominated by the James Beard Foundation for Best Chef in the Mountain region in 2020, and in March 2022 nominated in the Outstanding Restaurant category, which was a first for any Utah restaurant in the history of the awards.
The practicalities
It is a small kitchen in a town of 227, and it is seasonal. Book ahead, check it is open on your dates, and do not drive 27 miles over the Hogback on the assumption that you will get a table.

Getting there
The Hogback
Between Escalante and Boulder, Scenic Byway 12 runs along a narrow ridge with no guardrails and steep drops on both sides. It is one of the most striking pieces of road in the country and it is not a drive you rush, particularly in the dark or in wind.
Twenty seven miles takes longer than twenty seven miles should. Allow forty minutes and more if you stop, which you will. There are pullouts, and using them rather than slowing on the ridge itself is the courteous and safer option.
North of Boulder the byway climbs Boulder Mountain on the Aquarius Plateau, which is a different world again: over 50,000 acres of rolling forest and meadow on top, and the highest timbered plateau in North America. Full detail on Scenic Byway 12, and the drive in on getting to Escalante.
Winter is a real consideration here
Boulder sits at 6,700 feet and the Boulder Mountain section north of town goes considerably higher. Snow closes or slows that stretch in a way it does not affect Escalante, so check conditions before committing to a Boulder base between November and March.

Yes, but check conditions first. Boulder sits at 6,700 feet and the Boulder Mountain stretch north of town climbs much higher, so snow affects access in a way it does not at Escalante's 5,820 feet.
